Do You Wine?

What are your thoughts on drinking alcohol, specifically red wine? Red wine is thought to be heart-healthy and also contains antioxidants, and even lower bad cholesterol. There are many arguments for drinking red wine, and also quite a few reasons to avoid it, not least among those alcohol abuse and related liver issues.

But what do you think? Does red wine (or any alcohol at all) have a place within a healthy eating plan? Do you drink alcohol, and if so what kind, how often, and why?

Do you not drink alcohol? If so, why? For religious, social, or personal reasons, or simply because you don't like the taste?

I am eager to hear what you all have to say on this topic!

  1. I rarely drink alcohol - wine or other types. Just b/c my life style doesn't really call for it, I'm not well educated in that area, and it's kind of expensive. I do believe there have got to be health benefits to including red wine in the diet b/c let's look at the French and Italians - clearly they're doing something right! However, alcohol also contains a lot of unnecessary calories and other things that can sometimes slow weight loss - so I guess it should be avoided if you're trying to lose weight.I guess if you're drinking in minimum amounts that would not affect your liver and you're at a good weight then it seems a recipe for success to me. Otherwise if you abuse it (like you can abuse anything) it becomes not so healthy!

  2. I definitely enjoy cocktails - I'm more of a social drinker than anything else (university habits, what can I say?) but when I do treat myself to a night out, I'll have a few drinks without any major guilt or worry because it's not a super frequent occurrence - maybe a few times a month at most.

hey beth, interesting...we were just talking about red wine after yoga this afternoon! one woman was saying that she swears by a glass a day to stay "regular" but it cant be a dry red. ive also heard lots of health benefits.i dont drink at all though. i used to, but i started having issues with the feelings that alcohol would bring...almost panicky or out of control even with the tiniest 3 second "buzz." so i havent drank in a long time but gosh...maybe i should try again at some point. i sure had way too much fun with it in college, lol!

  4. I rarely drink alcohol although I do like the occassional glass of wine with a meal. Alcohol and fibromyalgia do not go well together and I get horrible hangover type feelings after as little as half a glass sometimes!Having said that I don't think there is anything wrong in enjoying a drink. Everything in moderation. Like everything else drink mindfully, be sure to know your limits and these things are better as a treat than an every day occurance.

  5. No alcohol for me anymore. I used to drink casually. Then I started using alcohol to numb the pain. I began avoiding the real problems and just masking them with alcohol. It became time to stop. I never got to be alcoholic or out of control but I have a very addictive personality and I could see that I was headed there. I chose to remove all alcohol from my life. It was the right choice for me. I still crave a drink from time to time but I choose not to partake. A few years after I gave up alcohol, I chose to return to the faith in which I was raised and abstaining from alcohol is part of that faith. I happily obey.
