Do you know what today is? (Well, besides April Fools -- I was totally going to post a bogus announcement about a VitaMix giveaway, but Katie beat me to it and fooled me in the process.) It's Holy Thursday! At least, it is for Catholics, but since I was raised Catholic I still consider this one of "my" holidays, even if I no longer identify with the Roman Catholic Church.I do, however, identify with Jesus! Do you know what Holy Thursday is all about? Today Catholics/Christians remember the Last Supper. My favorite thing about this part of Jesus' story is his length last message to his friends and disciples, which we can read in chapters 13 through 17 in the Gospel of John. It's pretty powerful stuff (despite the silliness of Lego Jesus) and some of the lines are probably well known enough to be recognized by folks who aren't too familiar with the Bible. In John's version of the story, we learn about Jesus washing his disciples' feet, breaking of bread and wine (which developed into modern communion or Eucharist), and Judas' betrayal depicted by his dipping into the same bowl as Jesus.
Want more specific amazingness from the Last Supper? How about his promise of friendship, part of the "I am the vine, you are the branches" section from Jesus' final talk with his friends (from The Message version of John 15:11-16):
I've told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I'm no longer calling you servants because servants don't understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I've named you friends because I've let you in on everything I've heard from the Father.You didn't choose me, remember; I chose you. . . .
Cool stuff. Cooler, even, than a Vita-Mix.

Wow....It was awesome reading Jesus's words in yet another version...and I truly felt the depths and intimacy in his words...to be made best friends with the God Almighty...what a great privilege! I didn't know you were Catholic at first! Man, would love to talk with you about your story and experiences over a cup of coffee and scone. :-)
